Is talking about salary taboo?

Suze Orman was on the radio on my way to work this morning. She was promoting her new hard cover version of her old book, The 9 Steps to Financial Freedom. She talked about many issues we have like the mortgage crisis and what to do. If you are interested you can check out her book.

tabooOne thing Suze mentioned is why people do not talk about how much they make, but are willing to talk about anything else personal. She explained that this might be part of the problem why people are having so much trouble with money, because they don’t want to talk about it. She gave two specific reasons why people don’t talk about how much they make:

  1. People are ashamed to say how much they make if they think they are not making as much as their peers
  2. People think they are making more than their peers and do not want to make anyone feel bad

I personally think it’s taboo to talk about how much someone makes. In any situation it can only make people uncomfortable as it is a direct comparison for people. I know there are some people out there that don’t care and will tell anyone how much they make.

Do you agree or disagree?
